Vishnuprayag Hydroelectric Project
A run-of-the-river hydro project brings clean energy to the people of Uttarakhand.
A run-of-the-river hydro project brings clean energy to the people of Uttarakhand.
In order to use green sources to meet the ever-growing energy demands, a decision was made to implement a hydroelectric project at Vishnuprayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauli Ganga Rivers, 6000 feet above sea level. show all
Flowing water creates energy that is captured and turned into electricity. This is called hydroelectricity (hydro-) power. show all
Although both dams and run-of-the river structures influence the environmental set-up in the surrounding areas, run-of-the-river projects have a considerably smaller impact. Run-of-the-river projects do not require any storage of water and so there is no resultant flooding. For this reason run-of-the-river projects are becoming increasingly favoured. show all
As the project activity involves generation of electricity by renewable sources, it will displace anthropogenic greenhouse gases that would have been generated from the production of power to the grid using fossil fuels. At present, more than 70% of the region's power is generated using fossil fuels.
The emission reduction due to the project activity during a given year is calculated as the difference between baseline emissions (in a business-as-usual scenario), project emissions and emissions due to leakage.
Chamoli hosts a variety of destinations of pilgrim and tourists' interest: Badrinath - the most important of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage; Hemkund Sahib - a Sikh temple (gurdwara), one of the most sacred of Sikh shrines; the Auli ski resort and the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chamoli is the birthplace of the Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan (literally "to stick" in Hindi). This socio-ecological movement practised the Gandhian methods of non-violent resistance, through the act of hugging trees to protect them from being felled. The modern Tree hugging movement started in the early 1970s in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand with growing awareness towards rapid deforestation.
